The development history of electricity meters
May 14 , 2021

With the ever-increasing demand for electricity in industry, agriculture, commerce, and residential life, people's electricity transactions are becoming more frequent. As instrument for measuring the amount of electricity transactions, electricity meter has also entered thousands of households. Up to now, the electricity meter has undergone 4 upgrades.

The first generation is induction type meter, also known as mechanical meter. It emerged from the principle of electromagnetic induction in 1905 and became the standard instrument for electrical energy management. The simple structure and operation, convenient maintenance and low cost make it widely used. However, due to technical limitations, there are also defects such as heavy weight, large size, single function, large measurement error, and poor anti-theft ability.

The second generation is electromechanical meter, based on induction type meter, using electronic circuits to realize more new functions, such as Time of Use (TOU) tariff, pulse output, prepaid card, etc. It improves the overall integration degree, and the process of the strengthened treatment of parts lengthens the life of meter. But it still faces problems such as low measurement accuracy and function expansion difficulty.

The third generation is electronic meter, also known as static meter. With the development of power electronics technology, based on the microscopic electronic circuits, it has powerful functions for multi-function measurement, multi-tariff measurement, and power consumption monitoring, etc. The measurement accuracy is improved and the application function is enhanced, but the price is high and the anti-interference ability is poor.

The fourth generation is the current smart meter. Electricity meter rapidly developed to intelligent and systematic under the cultivation of many R&D personnel and production personnel. Smart meter is actually a new type of electronic meter, which has the functions of electricity metering, electricity consumption monitoring, information storage and processing, real-time monitoring, automatic control, information interaction, etc. Smart meter supports two-way metering, stepped and TOU tariff, peak and valley electricity prices, is the technical basis for realizing distributed power metering, two-way interactive services, smart homes and communities.

Now, people can check the electricity consumption information and pay the electricity bill on the phone without leaving home. The electricity meter in the future will also be more intelligent and convenient for our life!
